Winter!!!

It was hard getting out of bed this morning. Staring across the grass, everything is covered in white. There is no longer denying it, winter is here and its damn cold in the morning. Winter is the dead season for wedding photography in the southern hemisphere. May, June, July, August are traditionally the months in which wedding photographers tend to curl up, stay in bed late, catch up on albums, marketing and tidy out the studio. I have heard some photographers being tempted to try their hand at photographing weddings somewhere in the northern hemisphere for those months. That’s how bad things can get. Weddings are seasonal. September, October, March and April you can’t seem to get a moment’s rest, while May to August you wonder when things will pick up again.

This year there seems to be a small trend towards having winter weddings. I was quite surprised the other day to hear a prospective groom extol the virtues of winter weddings; venues are up to 50% cheaper, same goes for most of the vendors and the photographer that they wanted was available! Not to mention that you’re pretty much guaranteed no rain on your wedding day. This couple is getting married in L’Aquila this Saturday so I dropped by yesterday to have a look at the state of the place. The grass is green, the entire garden looks amazing and the renovations, since the last time I was there, look good. There is definately something to be said for the winter wedding.
