The Bouquet Shot

The bouquet shot is probably one of the more difficult shots in wedding photography – you know the one where the bride has just thrown the bouquet over her shoulder and the group of single women make a grab for it. Its a split second moment in which anything could happen.

I remember one wedding where the date of a certain cousin pushed a sibling out of the way leaving a bruise and ended up rugby tackling the bride.
That’s why you don’t often see these kind of shots in a wedding photographers portfolio, in fact I have only ever seen one spectacular bouquet shot and that was in a Wedding Photojournalists Association (WPJA) competition. It is probably the shot that I dread the most, you have only one chance and you definately have to use a flash, which makes the shot look grainy and badly lit. Its the kind of moment that sport photographers know really well.
So I was quite happy to be able to add a bouquet shot to my portfolio recently, after a rather lovely wedding at Magaliesburg Lodge.
