Same Gender Weddings
A couple of days ago a local wedding album publisher posted a message on the Digital Wedding Pro board about same gender weddings. I’d like to make a quick comment, more of a rant so feel free to just skip over this post.
The Digital Wedding Pro is a board for South African wedding photographers and vendors who cater to this community, and the post read something along the lines of … they will not print any pornographic, political or same sex marriage material. Now setting aside any political or religious arguments I don’t understand how someone can bring their religious beliefs into a business situation, the next step, we will not print any non-Christian weddings?
It upsets me on many levels that they felt it necessary to post this kind of disclaimer. However on a brute business level this places many of the South African photographers in a predicament, what are they supposed to say to their clients? Sorry you can’t have this package because my publishing company will not print any same gender wedding albums. This is just very indicative of the South African market and one of the reasons why there are flourishing scenes in the rest of the world and not here. My studio has never used this publisher, but we have promoted them on various forums, if you are a photographer and are looking for an alternative publisher drop me a line.
On the brighter side of things a new portal has opened up catering for gay, queer, same gender weddings called pride weddings, started up by Nadine Symington its vendor listings are still growing but its a hoping to be a resource for gay couples not wanting to deal with the hassle of having to ask “Do you mind shooting a queer wedding”. The mind boggles that you would have to ask, but anyway. enough of the rant, I am fairly sure its unconstitutional to refuse to publish something on the basis of same sex material and I certain that someone will take them up on it soon.
