So it’s Sunday, the day after New Year’s Day, we’re driving around Pretoria trying to find a caffeine fix. There’s a suspicious lack of open coffee shops here, I should have stopped at the Shell on the N1 and gotten a takeaway. I’ve never really understood Pretoria, I lived here for a couple of days in the 90′s, but never really got it.

My brother used to live here until recently, and visiting him it’s always seemed like there is this ubiquitous feeling that permeates the area north of the N14. Something that I’ve never been able to put my finger on, just a feeling all of its own. I’ve been all around the world and Pretoria has always seemed about as foreign as any former Eastern European country – good if you’re going to photograph a wedding, bad if you’re trying to find a cup of coffee on the first Sunday of the new year. We eventually find a mall with an open coffee shop and grab a cappuccino and a toasted sandwich. The GPS, which has no feelings about Pretoria one way or another, gets us to the Pretoria Country Club without a hitch.

Emily looked like a rockstar, I immediately forgot that she was six months pregnant – check out Luis dipping her during the first dance! I always mention how our brides are always game for anything, apparently our six months pregnant brides are also game for anything. So we snuck on to one of the greens in high heels (Emily, not me) and took some killer bee images. It was just so alien looking, like an evergreen crop circle, it had to be done.
