Johannesburg Art Fair

V and I spent the afternoon at the Johannesburg Art Fair, we’ve been meaning to buy some art for a while and since we have so little time, it seemed like a plan to visit a whole bunch of galleries at the same time. Four hours later, we’d said hi to a whole bunch of people we knew from way back when and checked out some disturbing pieces, but the only things that jumped out as amazing, some of the Kentridge stuff, and anything by Gerhard Marx, were way out of our budget (quick side story, when Gerhard was a student, he lived with a good friend of mine, and he designed this skull in the shape of Africa surrounded by doves tattoo for me, I changed my mind at the last moment and didn’t get it tattooed, I wonder how much a custom Gerhard Marx tattoo design would go for these days). All was not lost though, Jane Alexander’s Security installation was pretty cool and worth the R100 entrance fee on its own.

I was actually pretty disturbed to see Greg Marinovich’s print of the AWB members gunned down in Bophuthatswana being sold as a print. I remember watching that moment on the news and just feeling sick.
