I talk a lot
I’ve been doing a lot of consultations recently, four in the last week, and I’ve had some nice comments made about my style of presentation. Apparently most photographers just show the couple their albums, answer some questions and expect them to make up their minds based on the photos. My approach is a little different. Apparently I talk a lot.
I like to explain the story behind the photos. I feel that the couple, whose wedding it is, knows certain things that wouldn’t be apparent to outsiders. They know that the uncle who’s smiling in the photo, hugging the bride, nearly didn’t make it to the wedding and arrived straight from the hospital. They know that the bride is looking at her father who had just made his speech, thanking him for his well wishes and prayers. The photos encapsulate a moment, they represent an event in a family’s history, and sometimes the moment they encapsulate is as important as the artistic merit of the photo. This is what is missing in traditional wedding photography. I think that it is important when looking at the photos to know the stories behind them, 20 years down the line when you show the photos to your children, or grandchildren, you will tell them the stories. My photos have stories.
I also like to explain the technical details behind the stories. It is difficult to project yourself into someone else’s photos. Each wedding is unique and your wedding will probably not look anything like the weddings in the photos being shown to you. How are you supposed to tell whether a photographer is good or not? I like to explain what I’m doing with each photo so you can tell what my style is like, and technically what I do with the photos. What you can anticipate from the photography, rather than expecting you to project yourself into someone else’s wedding and imagine what your photos will look like.
It’s a lot of talking, but I think gives the couples a better idea of the photography they can expect rather than just showing them a lot of photographs that eventually just blur into each other.
