Hakunamatata – Tracy and Mike
Highveld thunderstorms are possibly the only reason to still be living in Johannesburg, huge shards of lightning tearing through the sky, raindrops the size of grapes. We were on our way back home from Hakunamatata and I was thinking that Tracy’s pink gumboots are going to come in handy this evening. Did I mention that Tracy and Mike followed us through a field of scorched black grass in a Kristin Masters dress to get a shot that I really wanted … Well, ok, the whole story kind of goes something like this. This was our first time at Hakunamatata, so the week before we went through to have a quick scout of the venue and pick some spots that I liked for their photoshoot.
Hakunamatata is a gorgeous venue, kind of African, kind of spa like, with some pretty radical wooden animal sculptures but not really my kind of aesthetic when it comes to photography. I’m not really big on greens and reds, I like to use more of a palette of browns, yellows, ivory and blues. So we spent the afternoon knocking on various farm doors, chatting to strangers, eventually speaking to a cool lady called Irene who said we could use a spot of veld in the front of her plot for our photoshoot. I also spotted a cool half-knocked down building on a large patch of burnt grass, which I thought would give more of a rocking industrial feel.
A quick phone call to Tracy and she just said, lets do it. On the day I kind of eyed her heels, wondering how we were going to get her into the thigh high veld, but she was not only super prepared – this is a woman who booked us so far in advance we hadn’t even opened bookings for 2010 yet – but she also brought some rocking pink gum boots along for the photoshoot. Rockstar of note! … and on a quick sidenote before I end the post, you haven’t seen getting down until you’ve seen getting down at a Chinese wedding.
