Morning, so it seems that somehow I ended up in bed late last night. I woke up this morning, wrapped in blankets, shoes off and half drunk cup of coffee on the side table. The last thing I remember is editing some images of the wedding and being really cold, it’s still raining in Joburg.
In Tzaneen however it was a warm day when Celia and Hugh got married at The Coachhouse. A couple of things that stood out for me were:
Celia’s outfit. Stylish, old world elegance. Short veil, gloves, pearls. Hugh was in a matching ivory suit which just kicked ass all around. Beautiful and so easy to photograph. Even the vintage Jaguar they had to ferry them around was in classic ivory.
The location had some of the most incredible views. The trees that they got married under looked to be a couple of hundred years old (although what do I know, I was hoping to see Baobabs so you have to know what my botany/geography is like).
The weather. It started off misty and foggy and slowly the sun rose, burned away the fog and turned the day sunny and perfect with just a couple of clouds to aid the interpid photographer. Pretty impressive given that we were in Queen Modjadji (The Rain Queen) territory.
The ceremony however was only outclassed by the reception. Held at Mosaic Restaurant at Alon, it was intimate, classically elegant and African all at the same time. The Alon band played jazzy numbers and laidback rock. I’m actually a bit at a loss for words to explain Alon. I think I want to think about what I want to say and I’ll post an entry just about Alon sometime later this week. I just wanted to say thank you to all our new friends and just generally nice people we met at Alon; Kim, Christine, Lotta, Jonathan, Adonis,Adriaan and many others whose names I don’t remember right now.
I know, I know, a lot of writing today, but it was a pretty amazing wedding. Just one last shout out to Pierre and Pauli who are an amazing videography team we met at the wedding. They drove through from Pretoria at 2am to get to Tzaneen in time, had been awake for 24 hours and still kept good cheer, kept us going, shot some incredible footage and were just incredible people to be around.
Ok – here are the pics you’re waiting for.
There’s probably an actual name for this type of veil – I love the short classical nature of it

Hundred year old trees framed the ceremony. It was incredible
