Nina and Ryan at Moon and Sixpence – and we’re back

Sunday, August 19th, 2007

After a short break, we are back and accepting wedding commissions for 2008. Look out for some of our weddings currently being featured in The Wedding Diary, Femme Bride and Top Billing magazine. There’s also a top secret project in the works which will … ne, you’ll have to wait.

To wet your appetites here are a few images. I did some second shooting with Andrea Carlyle at the Moon and Sixpence. I always love doing second shooting, you get to have all the fun without having to worry about the standard poses and photos, plus I get to shoot from the back of the chapel. Nina and Ryan were a great couple and all I can say about the wedding is that I dance like a white guy.

V’s Birthday

Tuesday, May 1st, 2007

It was V’s birthday today, and we decided to take the day off from the studio, since it also happens to be a public holiday in South Africa, and head out east to Dullstroom. Beautiful day, blue skies, and big mielie fields – Dis mos mielies.
We had some amazing trout at a bistro down the main drag and found these incredible handmade wooden carousels (The Columbia Guide to Standard American English assures me that’s the correct spelling) that play “Its a small world”. We got caught in a traffic jam near Belfast (population 10 000), which was more funny than stressful.
Anyway not much more to say, Dullstroom is definately worth a look if you’re in the area or in the Pretoria/Johannesburg region, I just wanted to say happy birthday sweet thing.

Mary and Anthony at The Rand Club

Monday, April 30th, 2007

There seems to be so much to say. Thank you both for being amazing people, V and I had a total blast at the wedding. The Rand Club was such a perfect place to celebrate an amazing couple and two incredible families. Anthony, you rocked the house with your speech. I think you said all that there is to say on the matter.

You can see their sneak peek here.

[ Vendor Prop ] – Even though we were dangerously close to adopting the bass player, I’m going to give this vendor prop to the two families. Dor, was the bomb, gracious, kind and welcoming. The others were just as welcoming. There were octogenerians who made me feel I should go for dance lessons. Thank you guys for looking after us and always asking how we were doing.

Oded Balilty

Monday, April 30th, 2007

I don’t normally post other photographer’s images on this blog, but this image has has refused to be scraped off my conciousness ever since I saw it. It was shot by Oded Balilty and was recently awarded the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for photography.

I just can’t get over the way she is so close to the edge of the image, on the verge of being pushed right out of the frame. Amazing photo.

Not quite Paris

Sunday, April 22nd, 2007

V and I are back from a very wonderful, very restful vacation. One day I might even tell you the story of how two South Africans found themselves on a very small plane from Paris to Zagreb, driving a rental car down the coast to the magical city of Trogir via Zadar, taking a bus through Bosnia and ending up in Dubrovnik. It was an incredible vacation and I spent most of the time feeling like I was living in an European fairytale.

We only kind of made it to Paris, if you count four hours as making it, but the rest of the trip was amazing. The country was rural, untouched in some places, completely ravaged by war in others. We drank coffee in hundred year old coffee houses and walked along the plaća where children were using ruins from Roman times as a playground.

Anyway, we are back, refreshed, ready to polish off those last couple of albums and shoot what will probably be our last wedding in South Africa. Just as soon as we get through the 8000 odd emails that made it past the spam filters while we were away. Here are a couple of photos – and some narrative – in case you are interested.

Croatia

We took a wrong turn somewhere near Tušilović and ended up looking at a left over battle field. Tanks and cannons were just lying there. Everywhere you look buildings have bullet holes and are in various stages of repair. People live here.

Croatia

The view from our room at the Villa Sikaa overlooking the old city of Trogir. The Villa Sikaa is a hotel inside another hotel, inside a turn of the century Villa right on the waterfront.

Croatia

The old city of Trogir, not really a big tourist destination, but on a Sunday evening the Riva rocks as the superhip come out to be seen. The place really looks like someone put it together for a movie set.

Croatia

The entrance to a coffee shop in the city of Split.

Croatia

Split has some of the most magical light I have ever seen. I fell in love with the light in this city.

Croatia

Dubrovnik. Pretty much all that can be said about Dubrovnik has been said all over the internet. Its beautiful, filled with tourists and worth a look for some really fantastic architecture. Up a very steep little street, we found the oldest Sephardi synagogue in the world. Old, small, unexpected. It was a fantastical surprise, very moving, and their museum held some pieces that really brought home some things for me.

Croatia

Plitvička jezera is an incredible journey into a European fairytale. A massive forest consisting of interlocking lakes, hundreds of waterfalls, and wooden walkways built along the lakes and waterfalls. We walk for six hours in the forest before seeing another human being. Following V in her red hooded top, I felt like the bad wolf in a bed time story.

For all those couples that have been patiently waiting while we took this much needed break, thank you. I really appreciate it. If you ended up on this page because you were looking for some info on Croatia – you’re welcome to drop me a line and ask for any information you may need.

Davina and Shaun at The Midrand Conference Centre

Monday, March 26th, 2007

It is almost midnight here in South Africa, and I did promise Davina I would have her sneak peak up today and I think I’m just about to make it.

Your wedding was a perfect day of fun and laughter amongst friends and family that travelled from all over the world to be with you. The love that they showered on you is a reflection of how you love and treat them and each other. What can I say, for us it was a great day amongst very real and very chilled people, Davina you looked incredible, the weather was perfect and you were both a pleasure to be with and to photograph. Thank you, and your families, for having us and sharing your day with us.

You guys are hopefully in Mauritius by now, enjoying some serious sunshine. Have a fantastic time, you both deserve it.

Almost forgot, you can check out their sneak peek here
