Morrells Boutique Venue – Janet + Thomas
Friday, December 10th, 2010There’s this framed photo hanging on the wall in the studio, just above the imac. It’s of my brother and I, black and white, looking like it was taken at around the same time the old testament was written. A bit stained, it looks like it hadn’t been left in the fixer for long enough and the hundred odd years that have passed have taken their toll on it. I don’t remember the day it was taken.
I look like I’m about seven, which would make my brother around five. I’m dressed up like a cowboy, pudgy hand hanging on to my plastic sixshooter, a Lone Ranger mask around my face and a cowboy hat that doesn’t quite fit on my head. The smell of that leather hat, just out of reach in whatever part of the brain holds memories. My brother is holding my other hand, he is dressed up as the snow queen, longish hair neatly parted into a bob, lipstick and a shawl. It is my favorite photo of us as children, my childhood memories wrapped up in a single photo. Some days I can stare at it for hours.
There’s this photo of Janet and Thomas that makes me feel the same way. Memories wrapped in a single photo. They’re dancing by the light of an outdoor lamp, the light is filtering from the right, they’re framed in the doorway. I can’t remember the song. I remember the way that they were in their own world, just the two of them. It’s not your typical wedding photo, no flash, no over-posed contrived movement, just a frame stolen from a late night film. In twenty years time I want Janet and Thomas to look at this photo and remember what they were feeling at that moment.
Make-up: The inimitable Sam from Lashline.
