The Living Room, Maboneng – Daniel and Carla

Sat, 08 Jul 2017

If you’ve been following this blog for any length of time you probably know that I love shooting in Joburg. Not just the hip areas like Braamfontein and Maboneng, but Newtown, the Nelson Mandela Bridge, the old CBD around Fox Street, the old Chinatown. There is just so much history and authenticity in those places. I love the way that Joburg is a million things to a million people but it’s always Johannesburg, whether you’re in Bree Street next to that guy that sells dentures on the side of the road, or on top of Randlords looking down on a million twinkling lights.

So when Carla called up and said they were having their wedding at The Living Room I was pretty excited. The area around Arts on Main and Maboneng is just too easy to photograph and they seemed like the most relaxed couple. Just at ease with being themselves and excited to be getting married. Carla’s only request was a photo with the Maboneng sign in the background, and I did put old Daniel on the spot at one point and asked him to write on the wall what he wanted to do before he died. I thought he did pretty well …

Arts on Main Wedding – Tasmin and Dylan

Wed, 03 May 2017

On those Sundays where I haven’t just shot a wedding, and am too busy inhaling as much caffeine as I can get my hands on, we often head out to the Maboneng Precinct for their Market on Main. Nice food, a couple of art galleries, and a lot of people who look like The Smith Brothers (the cough drop guys). So I was super excited to be photographing a wedding there. You know, it’s downtown Joburg, killer bee views, the food at The Canteen is just insane, and there is some serious street art in that area, Faith47, Hannelie Coetzee and the paste up king himself, to name a couple of my favorites.

It didn’t disappoint, gorgeous light under the olive trees, the sound of Friday afternoon traffic across that bridge, people going about preparing for the weekend. The city starting to get that empty feeling. My favorite time to be out and about in Johannesburg. Something a bit edgier, more urban, and a couple who were super easy to photograph. Got some killer bee stuff with the Hillbrow tower in the background. Nice.

Jozi Weekends

Sun, 15 Jan 2017

Being a wedding photographer is one of those professions where you tend to end up socializing with other wedding photographers purely on the fact that most things happen on weekends – and we work most weekends. On the occasional weekend when we aren’t working you’ll find V and I in the city. Checking out the new exhibitions, looking around the organic markets, spotting new street art and having breakfast (most important meal of the day) at one of the little coffee shops – our favorite spot is the Argentinian Bakery although the canteen at Market on Main is a very very close second.
I tend to avoid Sandton and the eastern part of Joburg, too many people, too little soul. I spend a lot of time photographing the city, it’s just one of those places I never seem to get tired of.

my favorite piece of graffiti in the city, it’s called don’t carry your heart on your shoulder and I think it is one of Breeze Yoko’s pieces
