Indian wedding – Sasha and Rajiv

Tue, 24 Jan 2017

I’ve probably mentioned this somewhere on this blog before, but Indian weddings comprise probably half of the weddings that I shoot. It’s an interesting mix of being at the right place at the right time, i.e. knowing what is going on in the ceremony and being prepared for the fact that there are going to be a lot of people on a very small stage.

About eight years ago when I shot my first Hindu Ceremony, I think it was somewhere in Lenasia, don’t quote me on that though, I remember thinking wow, this is so emotional, even the groom is weeping. Stand on the mandap and get a little closer to the fire and when that smoke starts getting in your eyes and you may find that your photographer might be looking a little emotional as well. The trick … wear glasses, and try not to get smoke in your lens.

So everyone obviously arrived on indian time, which meant that I had a couple of extra minutes to shoot Sasha and Rajiv, which made for some amazing pics in the veld outside the venue.

So many more images from Sasha and Rajiv’s very stylish wedding can be found on our facebook page.

Gaborone, Botswana Wedding – Huma and Aatique

Tue, 18 Oct 2016

We’ve been shooting a lot of Muslim weddings and Indian weddings lately, which means some seriously spicy food. Thanks to Libyan grandparents it happens to be my favorite kind of food – except for that time in Durban when I put a heaped plateful of what was labelled ‘lamb casserole’ on my plate and literally felt my teeth melt.

So we headed out past Koster to Gaborone, Botswana for Huma and Aatique’s fabulous wedding. A three-day affair with the Dholki at the Phakalane Golf Estate, the reception at The Gaborone Sun and the Walima up at Roof Of The World in Mokolodi. Days later, back home in Johannesburg, a slight cough turning into flu, I’ve been taking a lot of medication that says Do Not Operate Heavy Machinery. I have happy memories of Aatique and Huma’s old world charm, that riotous dancing at the Dholki and the secret promise I made to myself to take some Bollywood dance classes – that looked like insane fun.

I probably won’t take up Bollywood dancing, I’m not that co-ordinated.

Many more photos from Huma and Aatique’s rocking Gabs wedding on our Facebook page, if you were there or are a friend you’re welcome to leave them a message or tag yourself.

Palm Ridge Temple Wedding – Nish and Nivaani

Sun, 11 Sep 2016

There seems to be a glitch in my brain, I keep wanting to say Palm Springs Temple whenever I think of the Palm Ridge Temple. Which btw is an amazing venue, one of the only temples I’ve seen outside of India that are so colorful. Most of the one’s I’ve worked at in South Africa and actually in Mauritius, are either white or various hues of pastel. This one is all solid colors.

It was a beautiful ceremony and wedding, filled with family and friends – Nivaani changed into a second outfit and we got to do a killer bee shoot at the back of the temple, something I’d been thinking about for a while. Quite often we only get to do a shoot in the morning of the wedding at another location, but I’ve been wanting to shoot at Palm Ridge since the first time I saw it.

More photos from the killer bee wedding can be found on our FB page. If you know them you’re welcome to tag yourself or leave them a message.

Oakfield Farm – Prelina + Yoshlyn

Sat, 20 Aug 2016

This summer business is getting out of hand out here in Joburg. I love hearing on the radio how it’s going to go up to 31C and looking at the thermometer and it’s reading 38C and it isn’t even 10am yet. So the fan is on, cause my sinuses can’t handle air conditioning in the studio, the air out here is already so dry. There are water restrictions in place so the grass is dying outside. It’s starting to feel like Africa out here, brown dust and insane heat. As V likes to say Africa isn’t for sissies. I suspect I may be one.

On the other hand if one was to give an award for the most bad ass bride ever, Prelina would be somewhere in there with a shot at gold. Just calm, relaxed, going with the flow, raising one arm in a power salute after she and Yosh are announced as husband and wife. It might run in the family though, cause I was seated next to an aunt and uncle, and they were pretty badass as well. I know what you’re thinking, so it was an Indian wedding? Yes … a hindu ceremony? yes – was there paneer? Yes, there was.

More pics from Prelina and Yosh’s very very rock ‘n roll Indian wedding can be found on our Facebook page.

Summerplace, Houghton – Orisha and Thiru

Sat, 04 Jun 2016

I’d do pretty much anything for a good paneer, ok, so I’d do most things for an average paneer as well. So it’s probably a good thing that at least half our weddings are Indian weddings. I’ve been trying to get the kids into curry, and Ariella loves it, The Bear not so much, but then he isn’t big on food – I’m not big on food either, unless it happens to be a really hot paneer.

It’s funny cause I’ve probably photographed over a hundred Hindu weddings, and the guru or priest always still tells me what is about to happen next and where I should stand. Orisha and Thiru were cool to hang out with both on the wedding day and at their respective Nelengu(s?) – what is the plural of Nelengu? – there were some cool wedding games involving an apple, killer speeches and and a series party.

You can see more images from their Indian wedding ceremony on our facebook page.

eBandla Hotel, Ballito Wedding – Andrea + Leon

Sun, 29 Nov 2015

Some days I just feel like the whitest boy alive. My grandparents are from the north of Africa, I’m used to eating really spicy food at home, stuff that could peel the paint off an E-class, and the curry smelled really incredible and I hadn’t eaten since the plane. Anyway, I took a large spoon full. OMG, F%^%$##, for a second I thought my teeth were melting, tears were starting to form in the corners of my eyes and I rapidly gulped down my coke, and what may or may not have been my orange juice. It may not have been orange juice at all actually. Hard to tell when your taste buds have been burned off.
A very sweet woman in a blue sari to my left turned to me and said, this curry is very hot. I smiled, feeling just slightly better until I saw three small children with lines shaved into their heads eating spoonfuls of the stuff. The youngest one looked like he was about two.

Casey, my second shooter for the day, was born and raised in Durban. I noticed she didn’t have any of the ‘lamb casserole’. Smart. Me, not so much, I felt like I’d just had a drive-by gastroscopy.

So yeah, Leon and Andrea, just two really cool people, when I arrived at Andrea’s house she was having her hair done – her explanation, she wanted the Taj Mahal on her head, I just thought it looked cool. The cakes at Indian weddings rock as well, I was having a chat to the person putting the cake together and she said “In Durban, you must have at least four tiers”, the cake itself was well over a meter high. Gorgeous KZN light, a long driveway flanked with trees with the sunlight just peeping through, Indian dancers. My kind of wedding.
