Lion Sands – Alicia and Michael

Sat, 15 Apr 2017

As much as I love Joburg, it’s nice to occasionally just get out into the bush. So I packed a small bag and boarded a very small plane to Skukuza, out there by the Kruger Park, near Sabi Sabi. Fifty minutes later I was in the tranquil space that is Lion Sands Tinga Lodge, for Michael and Alicia’s very cool, out in the bush with the wild animals, wedding. The kind of place where when the lions roar at night they aren’t in the lion park, and in the early morning you can spot a leopard stalking some buck. Incredible and awesome and Michael and Alicia were the two nicest people to hang out with. I could shoot a few more of these 🙂

You can see many more images from their Kruger Park wedding on our facebook page.

Mauritius Wedding, Long Beach – Kim and Bryan ( Part II)

Wed, 05 Apr 2017

I’m not sure how much more there is to say about this bad-ass Mauritius wedding, met some cool people, people who warned me about the cold weather in Canada, well they did actually say that some parts aren’t so bad and only drop below freezing during winter. It is 15 degrees celsius in Joburg at the moment, I have two jerseys on and what can only be generously described as a robe. I’m not the kind of person who handles cold well.

Right, so part I of this wedding blog post can be found here, as always there are loads more images from this killer bee wedding on our Facebook page, go look, click like and if you were a guest you’re welcome to leave a message.

A couple of things from the vendor side:
Vedna Essoo from Marry Go Round did an insanely amazing of keeping everything hassle free and on track. A real pleasure to work with, if you’re planning a wedding in Mauritius contact her now at info @ marry-go-round.mu.
If you’ve ever chatted to me about wedding videos, you know I’m not a huge fan. AVS Productions made me a convert, speak to Dam Nayna. They wore ties were on the ball and seemed to be everywhere without getting in the way.
Thanks to everyone else who made me feel welcome, even though I suck at volleyball.

Long Beach, Mauritius Wedding – Kim and Bryan (Part I)

Fri, 23 Dec 2016

Funny thing about winter is that night time sounds seem to travel longer distances, I’m back home from a very sunny Mauritius, back to the freezing cold of Joburg. The soft snoring sounds of Ariella and Bear down the corridor, a rogue biker revving his engine somewhere towards Lanseria and the roaring of the lions at the Lion Park down the road. Early mornings, the least likely time to be finding me asleep. I’m usually writing, or trying to write blog posts anyway. Somehow it’s difficult to write about sunny endless white beaches and tropical cocktails when you’re bundled up, holding a cup of coffee in your hands to keep them warm.

I can tell you that I’ve been waiting for Kim and Bryan’s wedding for almost two years now, I knew it was going to be epic. Really amazing people to be around and just a lot of fun – although I’m pretty sure that half the time they didn’t understand my accent, and there was that incident where I started eating what I was told was jellied eel which tasted a little odd, and … well, after several explanations turned out to be jellyfish. Add firebreathers, a breath taking sky … and fireworks and sega dancers and an insane view … it was that kind of wedding.

I’m going to make this one a two parter (part II is here). Its cold, I can hear Ariella chatting to herself in the room next door and it’s time for another cup of coffee. There are loads more images from Kim and Bryan’s ultra romantic Mauritius beach wedding on our facebook page, if you know them or you were a guest, you’re welcome to tag yourself in or leave them a message.

Just want to add major props and congratulations to Vedna Essoo from Marry Go Round, who organized and coordinated everything. She really really rocked it.

Megan and Carl’s Namibia Wedding Featured in Style Me Pretty.

Sun, 27 Nov 2016

Yep, Megan and Carl’s way out there in the Namib desert wedding got featured in Style Me Pretty. They said some pretty nice things about it as well –

I’ve seen a lot of amazing weddings grace the pages of SMP, but this desert beauty at Sossusvlei Lodge captured by Dror Eyal Photography and planned by Christelle Du Toit  is in a a league all of its own. Incredibly intimate and ridiculously stylish (hello gorgeous Jenny Packham  gown from Little White Dress Bridal Shop, I’m talking to you…), every moment sitting in this gallery is one for the books.

I do love Namibia weddings, loads of images from this incredible desert wedding on our Facebook page as well.

Kasane, Botswana Wedding – Nadine and Andrew

Sun, 18 Sep 2016

It had been raining on and off for the last couple of days, turning the area around the airport into a muddy field. I was wearing the shoes I usually wear for long trips, comfortable, but the grip on the soles had been worn off a long time ago. I was heading back home to middle-class suburbia, where we don’t serve warthog chops for supper, monkeys don’t make a grab for your beer and there isn’t a river teeming with hippos, crocodiles and tigerfish a couple of meters away from your doorstep. I’m the last off the taxi to the Kasane Airport, holding on to my camera gear, I misjudge the slipperiness of the mud on a step and slip.

It’s now a couple of days later, Joburg sunshine, messing around the garden with The Bear and trips to the local Pappachinos for Mediterranean wraps and watching The Bear play on the jungle gym. Some killer bee images from the trip, soft memories of a trip into the mother of storms on the Chobe River and a pain in my right hip where it connected with the edge of the taxi. A new year awaits. Thank you to everyone who welcome us into their lives in 2013, we had serious fun, serious adventures, and have some amazing memories.

More photos from Nadine and Andrew’s rocking Botswana wedding can be found on our facebook page, including images from the most badass Mad Hatter’s Tea Party in the African bush. If you were a guest or you know them, you’re welcome to leave a message or tag yourself.

Sossusvlei Namibia Wedding – Megan and Carl

Fri, 17 Jun 2016

Back at Sossusvlei Lodge, got to love Namibian weddings, especially one’s out here at Sesriem. Is there anywhere in the world that can beat DeadVlei for a photoshoot location? A white clay pan, amongst the largest sand dunes in the world. A forest of dry trees frozen in time. Pretty badass.

Megan and Carl got married under a social weaver nest in a camel thorn tree, in this small enclave surrounded by those huge rocks that you get in the desert. Just an insane venue, for two of the coolest people I’ve met in a long time. Just a blast to hang out with them, their friends, almost get locked in the park for the night.

An sunrise balloon ride over the desert, breakfast amongst the fairy circles of the Namib … just incredible. Right about now, these two are probably sipping cocktails on a beach in Seychelles so there are going to be a lot of photos. Hang tight.

As always there are even more images from Megan Carl’s out of this world Namibia wedding on our Facebook page, if you were a guest or you know the couple you’re welcome to leave them a message or tag yourself in.

PS: Carl and Megan’s wedding was recently featured in Style Me Pretty, if you’re a blog person.

Gaborone, Botswana Wedding – Huma and Aatique

Sat, 13 Feb 2016

We’ve been shooting a lot of Muslim weddings and Indian weddings lately, which means some seriously spicy food. Thanks to Libyan grandparents it happens to be my favorite kind of food – except for that time in Durban when I put a heaped plateful of what was labelled ‘lamb casserole’ on my plate and literally felt my teeth melt.

So we headed out past Koster to Gaborone, Botswana for Huma and Aatique’s fabulous wedding. A three-day affair with the Dholki at the Phakalane Golf Estate, the reception at The Gaborone Sun and the Walima up at Roof Of The World in Mokolodi. Days later, back home in Johannesburg, a slight cough turning into flu, I’ve been taking a lot of medication that says Do Not Operate Heavy Machinery. I have happy memories of Aatique and Huma’s old world charm, that riotous dancing at the Dholki and the secret promise I made to myself to take some Bollywood dance classes – that looked like insane fun.

I probably won’t take up Bollywood dancing, I’m not that co-ordinated.

Many more photos from Huma and Aatique’s rocking Gabs wedding on our Facebook page, if you were there or are a friend you’re welcome to leave them a message or tag yourself.

Le Touessrok Wedding – Gavin and Alison

Sat, 17 Oct 2015

Mauritius, Île Maurice, Îlot Mangénie, Hotel Le Touessrok, it’s been a while since I’ve been here. It’s a little bit of paradise. A small uninhabited island just off Mauritius. A gorgeous drive up the coast from the airport, those mad dogs I remember still lying in the middle of the road enjoying some heat radiating off the asphalt. Two of the nicest people getting married – we’d only had a quick Skype chat a year ago – but even on that very out of synch call they seemed pretty damn cool.

Today, I can’t remember anyone looking happier or as excited as Alison to be getting married. If she could have hurled herself down the aisle I’m sure she would have. Just an amazing beautiful day, a calm warm evening and a group of close friends on a tropical island half way across the world, and two timezones away from the UK. These guys don’t do things halfway. Got to love Mauritius weddings.

Oh, got to mention the seriously killer bee wedding coordinator – Annabelle Manick. Seriously on the ball, super organized, and super friendly. Each year I only take on a handful of destination weddings – even more so now that The Bear is here – I’m very grateful to have been able to photograph this one.

Right, as always there are more pics on our Facebook page, if you know Ali or Gav or were a guest at the wedding, you’re welcome to leave them a message or tag yourself in.

Chongwe River Lodge ( Zambia ) – Monique and Andrea

Wed, 15 Jul 2015

Three am and I’m awake. Actually I’m guessing it’s 3am, I don’t have a watch, but I’m usually awake at at 3am. It’s an hour that knows nothing about redemption. This morning it’s the sounds of hippos ricocheting across the Zambezi that accompanies my 3am fumbling for painkillers. We’re in a tent with open sides and I can vaguely see some stars, I can smell the river. The next morning Andrea will tell me that an elephant brushed up against the tent during the night.

We’re in Zambia for Monique and Andrea’s African bush wedding. Very cinematic, very African, elephants in the bush, hippos making those grunting sounds and a couple of fish eagles as a backdrop, early morning game drives, baobabs, dust, charter planes landing on tiny airstrips and a river that makes it’s way through six African countries.

I got to go with Ms Carlyle, who not only makes incredible images, but is also one of the few people who could survive three days with me without wanting to dispose of my body in the Zambezi. Well, if she did, she didn’t say anything.

Right, so a whole bunch more images from Monique and Andrea’s epic wedding at Chongwe can be found on our Facebook page, if you were there, or you know them, you’re welcome to tag yourself in, leave them a message or just click like.

BTW those are the tiny planes we took from Lusaka to Chongwe. Don’t even ask about turbulence.

UPDATE: Andrea has blogged the wedding on her site – go there and have a look.
